Three TV series and three films now fill Jake Johnson’s slate, with Apple TV+ releasing his pickleball comedy “The Dink” on July 24 as his first film out this year.
Johnson said he helped develop “The Dink” with writer Sean Clements, trained with coach Brad Gilbert for the role, and sold the independently financed film to Apple after a Hollywood screening.
On television, he is starring in Apple TV+ thriller “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed,” NBC comedy “Sunset P.I.” and Hulu pilot “Cable Guy,” a reworking of the 1996 film with Damon Wayans Jr.
Johnson said the streaming era sharply reduced residual income compared with network TV, citing “New Girl” and 2014 hit “Let’s Be Cops,” which grossed $130 million on a $17 million budget, while giving creators more freedom to work across projects.
