Summary
Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith backed Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, calling him “a fighter” less than two weeks before the Aug. 4 vote.
El-Sayed said Smith’s support strengthens his message on working-class economics and reproductive rights as he battles Rep. Haley Stevens for the nomination.
The endorsement adds to El-Sayed’s progressive coalition, which already includes Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Stevens has establishment support of her own: retiring Michigan Sen. Gary Peters and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are backing her to replace Peters.
The primary will decide who faces Republican Mike Rogers, who is backed by President Donald Trump and is unopposed for the GOP nomination.
