Kyushu University Finds LASSS More Than Doubles HGF Binding for Aging Muscle Repair

LASSS lifted HGF’s binding to the c-met receptor to more than twice untreated levels in Kyushu University experiments, pointing to a way to strengthen muscle repair as aging weakens regeneration.
HGF normally activates satellite cells that rebuild damaged muscle, but aging-related nitration at two sites—Y198 and Y250—can block that signal; LASSS reduced this damage and appeared to create a more active “Super HGF” form.
At a 1:8000 HGF-to-trisulfide test ratio, LASSS improved receptor binding and resistance to nitration, while the other sulfur-based compound, GSSSG, failed to restore HGF function.
Mouse tests using tail-suspension muscle atrophy also showed lower nitration levels after LASSS treatment, suggesting the effect extends beyond isolated proteins.
The July 24 Scientific Reports study said aging-animal safety and efficacy work is still needed before the approach could be developed for muscle loss linked to aging, bed rest or inactivity.
