A six-person Olmsted County jury deliberated about nine hours before convicting Shiloh Hendrix, 37, on one of two disorderly conduct counts tied to a viral confrontation with a Somali child and his father.
Judge Christa Daily sentenced Hendrix to a $1,000 fine, one year of probation, 200 hours of community work and a 90-day jail term stayed if she complies with probation.
The guilty count centered on Hendrix’s conduct in a video recorded after the confrontation, in which she repeated a racial slur; the footage drew millions of views and put Rochester in the national spotlight.
NAACP chapter president Walé Elegbede called the split verdict disappointing and cited Hendrix’s lack of remorse and more than $800,000 raised for her, while defense lawyer Brian Karalus denounced the trial and said he will appeal.
Rochester said Friday it respects the verdict but stressed the lasting harm to communities of color from an incident involving a child with a disability, pledging continued efforts to rebuild trust.
