4,173 confirmed cyclosporiasis cases and 7,400 more under investigation mark the CDC's highest US tally yet, with many of the additional reports coming from Michigan and Ohio.
41 states have recorded infections since cases were first detected on May 13, making this the largest known US outbreak of the intestinal parasite Cyclospora.
Michigan has been hit especially hard: Monroe County alone has logged 286 cases in a population of about 154,000, while residents describe severe diarrhea, weeks-long illness and growing fear over produce.
FDA investigators have focused on produce—especially iceberg lettuce—and Taylor Farms recalled lettuce from central Mexico, but officials still have not confirmed the source after retracting a reported positive lettuce test as a false positive.
