Benayahu Melet, 32, was killed and four other Israelis were wounded near Gilad Farm after a Palestinian grabbed an emergency responder's weapon and opened fire on hikers.
The attack followed two escalating clashes during a morning hike, with witnesses saying stone-throwing and club attacks grew into a crowd of hundreds before the gun was seized and used.
The IDF said it tracked down and killed the attacker, recovered the stolen weapon and rushed some of the wounded to hospital, including one in critical condition and another seriously hurt.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz and army chief Eyal Zamir then discussed the response as the military sent reinforcements and prepared wider arrests around Nablus and Samaria.
The shooting was the third West Bank attack in 24 hours, and officials also warned of possible settler reprisals after masked settlers were seen moving toward nearby Palestinian areas.
