349 points wiped off the Dow at the open, leaving the index down 0.67% in early trading.
Alphabet fell 5.92%, Amazon lost 3.11% and IBM dropped 2.90%, driving the index lower.
Chevron rose 1.77%, Merck gained 1.33% and Travelers added 1.11%, but those advances were not enough to offset the heavyweight declines.
