Summary
$57,600 in contributions from DTE Energy PAC and CMS Energy-linked donors has resurfaced for Democratic congressional candidate Sean McCann as he campaigns in Michigan’s 4th District.
McCann’s record is under fresh review because he backed Michigan’s 2023 clean-energy law targeting 100% clean power by 2040, a plan critics said could raise utility bills and heighten blackout risks.
The law required utilities to reach a 50% renewable portfolio by 2030, and a Mackinac Center report projected $386 billion in costs by 2050—about $2,746 annually per customer.
McCann also voted against an amendment that would have barred residential electric-rate increases until 2040, while defending the broader legislation as protecting public health and the environment.
His campaign countered that Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga has taken even more utility money, while McCann still has not secured the Democratic nomination ahead of Michigan’s Aug. 4 primary.
