Q: Is Elias Voit's 'redemption' a true exit for the character, or just a setup for a future 'Suicide Squad'-style return?

Elias Voit’s ending reads more like a strategic pause than a final goodbye. On screen, the Season 19 finale gives him real narrative closure. Voit is removed from the BAU’s orbit, transferred to a high-security federal prison, and takes responsibility for James Crowley’s death to protect his daughter Holly. Rossi’s decision to back that story gives the moment emotional weight. It is a genuine redemptive beat in the limited sense that Voit stops trying to outplay everyone and instead accepts punishment while shielding his family from further damage. But that is not the same as a permanent exit. Zach Gilford said he is “done, definitely for now,” which is a notably open-ended phrasing. He has also said he would return if the story made sense and even floated a “Suicide Squad”-style idea for the character. The show itself leaves useful doors open: Voit is alive, uniquely valuable as a criminal mind, and still psychologically tied to Rossi and the BAU. That makes the finale both an ending and an insurance policy. It closes the Sicarius chapter cleanly enough for the series to move on, while preserving Voit as a possible future asset, adversary, or imprisoned consultant if the writers need a high-stakes return. So his “redemption” is real as character development, but not definitive as franchise logic. In television terms, Voit is off the board, not erased from it.
