Twenty-three accounts in a Reddit thread showed no single coma experience, with many former patients saying they remembered nothing at all—describing a blank gap in memory rather than dreams, voices or awareness.
Several others recalled vivid hallucinations, nightmares or distorted time, often while in medically induced comas after crashes, surgery, seizures or cardiac arrest; some said they briefly heard relatives or staff without understanding what was happening.
Many stories focused less on the coma itself than on waking up: repeated confusion, missing weeks or years, and delayed memory formation were common, with some patients believing it was still the day before their injury.
Longer-term effects in the thread included personality changes, speech or mobility problems, relearning basic skills and lasting trauma, especially after severe brain injuries or comas lasting weeks to 9 months.
