Penn Study Links GLP-1 Drugs to 37%-68% Higher Alopecia Risk

A BMJ study led by the University of Pennsylvania found GLP-1 drugs were tied to more clinically recorded hair loss in type 2 diabetes patients than two common alternatives.
The analysis showed a 37% higher alopecia risk versus SGLT-2 inhibitors and a 68% higher risk versus DPP-4 inhibitors, mainly in non-scarring cases that may be reversible.
Absolute risk remained low: about 7 in 1,000 GLP-1 users developed hair loss within a year, versus 5 on SGLT-2 drugs and 4 on DPP-4 treatments.
Researchers compared more than 12,000 GLP-1 users with each control group and adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity and pre-existing conditions, though records could not capture severity, duration or reversibility.
The team said rapid weight loss and nutrient deficiencies such as low iron or zinc could help explain the link, and urged clinicians to weigh that risk against GLP-1 benefits.
