Jim Jordan Seeks Criminal Probe of Jack Smith Over 44 Lawmakers' Texts

Jim Jordan sent acting Attorney General Todd Blanche a criminal referral alleging Jack Smith lied to the House Judiciary Committee when he denied obtaining or reviewing lawmakers’ text messages.
Newly released records cited by Jordan and Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley show Smith’s team read messages from 44 members of Congress and White House staff during Trump-related investigations.
Jordan said Smith’s December testimony described the effort as limited to phone toll records, while the records indicate investigators accessed message content and may have bypassed a filter team meant to shield privileged material.
The lawmakers swept into the probe included Jordan, Grassley, Susan Collins, Steve Scalise and Cory Booker, while Trump-world figures such as Mike Pence, Stephen Miller and Ivanka Trump were also affected.
The referral deepens Republican claims that Smith weaponized the Justice Department in the 2020 election and classified-documents cases; Smith has denied wrongdoing and the Justice Department did not immediately comment.
