MLB draws the line at intent and effect: a batter may keep a personal routine, but not if umpires and the league judge it to be a tactic designed to fool the pitcher or exploit the pitch clock. Under MLB’s pace-of-game rules, the batter must be in the box and “alert to the pitcher” by the eight-second mark. The league also bars “conduct by batters designed to deceive a pitcher” into starting his motion or otherwise violating the clock. That is the key distinction. A ritual is allowed if it is simply part of getting set; it becomes illegal if it is seen as a deliberate attempt to manipulate the pitcher’s timing. That is why José Caballero’s case became a test. Caballero says he uses the same routine every time and needs it to control the at-bat. MLB, however, viewed his habit of keeping his head down until the last moment as more than routine. Plate umpire Quinn Wolcott said Caballero was taking “an inordinate amount of time looking down,” and crew chief Adrian Johnson said MLB instructed umpires to enforce the rule immediately. The league has taken a similar approach before, including warnings to hitters who used foot placement or late readiness to bait pitchers into violations. In practice, MLB’s standard is not whether a move is unusual or irritating, but whether it appears intended to create confusion, induce a pitcher’s mistake, or circumvent the spirit of the clock. That leaves room for judgment, which is why these calls remain contentious.

José Caballero was hit with an automatic second strike in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 10-inning 5-3 loss after umpires ruled his pre-pitch routine violated MLB’s pitch-clock deception standard.
MLB had instructed the crew before the doubleheader to enforce the rule without a warning after Caballero’s routine helped spark a benches-clearing incident with Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana on Monday.
Aaron Boone called it “embarrassing” that the Yankees were not told in advance, while Caballero said he was not trying to trick pitchers and accused umpires of “picking on” him.
The dispute spilled over elsewhere: hitting coach James Rowson was ejected after arguing the call, and Gerrit Cole was later charged with a balk when he said the pitch clock malfunctioned as he held a runner.
