Summary
5-20mm of rain is forecast this weekend across parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, north Wales and western Scotland, while the Midlands, south and east may get only a few millimetres or miss out entirely.
A westward shift in the long-standing high-pressure system will let the jet stream cross the UK and push in weather fronts, ending a prolonged dry spell in many areas.
Since 15 June, most of England has had less than 10mm of rain, with large parts of central southern England seeing 3mm or less; Wisley in Surrey has recorded 36 straight days without rain.
The rainfall may briefly ease pressure on parched ground but is not expected to halt the drift toward wider drought, with hosepipe bans already in force across parts of southern England.
Next week, wetter conditions are expected to stay focused on the north-west and Highlands, while the south and east look largely dry and August could bring renewed heat risk from continental Europe.
