Four Madison officers confronted a man in his 30s near South Baldwin and East Williamson streets around 1:30 p.m.; after a struggle, one veteran officer shot him and he later died at a hospital.
Police said they had first responded around 1 p.m. to a report of a man checking vehicles, then found him again after he left on a bicycle and allegedly pulled a fixed-blade knife during the encounter.
Two officers were injured, a Taser was deployed before the gunfire, and Chief John Patterson said investigators are also reviewing additional video beyond clips already circulating online.
All four officers were placed on administrative leave, and the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation — not Madison police — will lead the case.
