ICE Seeks Custody of Man Charged in 3-Fatal North Carolina Hit-and-Run

ICE asked North Carolina authorities to keep Javiel Pena Sola in custody after he was charged with a July 18 hit-and-run in Salisbury that killed three people.
Sola, a Salvadoran citizen, allegedly struck a vehicle, fled the scene and was later found with help from a police K-9; two victims died at the scene and a third died after being airlifted to a hospital.
Three counts of hit-and-run involving serious injury or death were filed, and ICE lodged a detainer to prevent his release from local custody.
DHS said Sola had been arrested before, entered through Arizona in April 2022 and had prior Maryland cases including reckless endangerment, driving without a license and a previous hit-and-run-related conviction.
ICE said Baltimore authorities honored a detainer in 2016 and transferred him to federal agents, but he was released two months later, a history the agency says made the latest deaths preventable.
