The decisive moment came when he advanced toward officers with the machete. At that point, police judged that delay would leave too little time to protect themselves or nearby civilians, especially outside a hospital campus. That standard is consistent with broader police use-of-force rules and court-tested practice: deadly force is generally justified not simply because a person is armed, but because the person is actively threatening or moving to use that weapon in a way that creates an immediate danger. Officers are expected to consider distance, the suspect’s movements, whether commands are being ignored, the presence of bystanders, and whether less-lethal tools are working. A machete is treated as a deadly weapon because it can inflict catastrophic injuries within seconds. That is why negotiations, while important, do not continue indefinitely once the threat becomes acute. Investigators will now examine video, witness accounts, officer statements, timing, distance, and the failed de-escalation efforts to determine whether the shooting met the legal standard. In this case, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office is leading that review.

Around 11 a.m., a machete-wielding man in the parking lot at UCI Health–Los Alamitos prompted a lockdown at the medical center on Katella Avenue.
Video showed the shirtless suspect pacing on a sidewalk, swinging the machete and appearing to yell at officers during the standoff.
Long Beach and Los Alamitos police sent a large response, while Orange County Fire Authority crews waited on standby at the scene.
AIR7 footage later showed officers moving through the parking lot as the investigation began, but authorities did not immediately confirm whether the man had been taken into custody.
