If you cannot run Ethernet, the best “wired-like” options over existing home wiring are MoCA adapters over coax cable and powerline adapters over electrical wiring. MoCA is usually the stronger choice if your home has coax outlets. It turns TV-style coax lines into a network link, often delivering much more consistent performance and lower latency than powerline. Current MoCA 2.5 gear can reach up to 2.5 Gbps in ideal conditions, with real-world speeds commonly fast enough for 4K streaming, gaming, and large downloads. It works by placing one adapter near the router and another at the room you want to serve, using the home’s coax as the backbone. Powerline is the easier fallback when coax is unavailable. It sends data through your home’s electrical wiring using plug-in adapters. Setup is simple, but performance is far less predictable. Speed depends heavily on the age and quality of the wiring, distance between outlets, circuit layout, and interference from appliances. In many homes, real speeds are well below the headline numbers on the box. The broader analysis found that true speed gains usually come from Ethernet or buying a faster internet plan. But when Ethernet cabling is impossible, MoCA is the closest substitute for a stable wired connection, while powerline is a practical compromise.
