Bystander CPR likely was not enough because drowning is usually an oxygen-deprivation emergency, and CPR can only buy time; it cannot reverse severe damage already caused by prolonged lack of oxygen. In Nicole Grayson’s case, witnesses and a boater acted quickly, and Jon Reaka began CPR immediately after she was pulled from the river. That response mattered. In drowning cases, rescue breaths with compressions are especially important because the crisis typically begins with breathing failure, not a primary heart problem. But if a victim has been submerged too long, the brain, heart and other organs may already have suffered irreversible injury before CPR starts. Medical guidance describes CPR as a “bridge to life” because it helps circulate some oxygenated blood until paramedics and hospital teams can take over. It does not usually restart the heart by itself, and in many cardiac arrests an AED or advanced life support is also needed. In drowning, even when the heart is restarted, the body may have endured profound hypoxia, water aspiration and organ damage that are sometimes fatal despite hospital care. That is why immediate bystander action improves survival odds but cannot guarantee survival. Grayson’s rescuers appear to have done what they could under extreme circumstances. Her death underscores both the value and the limits of CPR: it is often the best chance a victim has, but it cannot always overcome the effects of severe submersion and oxygen loss.

Nicole Grayson, 43, died in a hospital ICU after jumping into the St. Johns River to save her 4-year-old son, who survived unharmed.
Around 4 p.m. Saturday at Ed Stone Park west of DeLand, the boy fell into the water while trying to retrieve an object he had dropped over a fence, prompting Grayson to go in after him.
A witness flagged down a passing boater, who threw life preservers and pulled the child aboard as Grayson kept him above water until she became submerged.
Witnesses and emergency crews performed CPR after Grayson was brought onto the boat unresponsive, but she was pronounced dead around 10 p.m., authorities said.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood and Grayson’s family called the mother of six a hero, saying her final act reflected how fiercely she protected her children.
