Katie Porter Exits Politics After 5th-Place Governor Finish and 4.4% Vote Share

Katie Porter told the Sacramento Bee she is "closing the door on being a candidate" after finishing fifth in California's governor race and saying she cannot foresee a return to elected office.
Two failed statewide bids preceded that decision: Porter missed the top two in the 2024 Senate primary with 1.27 million votes, or 17.2%, then fell to 403,908 votes, or 4.4%, in the 2025 governor's race.
Those campaigns were shadowed by allegations of toxic treatment of staff, including 2023 claims she berated an aide over COVID-19 and a leaked 2025 video showing her screaming at a staffer.
Porter, who left the House to pursue higher office after Dianne Feinstein's seat opened, said she now plans to focus on social media posts about books.
