House Backs 215-214 Default Approval for Personal Gun Carry on Military Bases

A 215-214 House vote would make approval the default when qualified service members and Pentagon civilian employees ask base commanders for permission to carry personal firearms.
The amendment stops short of automatic authorization, but creates a presumption commanders approve requests; it followed the 2025 Fort Stewart shooting in which an Army sergeant allegedly wounded five soldiers with a personal handgun.
Tuesday’s NDAA debate also added divisive social-policy provisions, including a 219-208 vote barring TRICARE coverage for transition-related care and a 221-203 vote blocking transgender girls from girls’ sports at Defense Department schools.
Those additions threaten Democratic backing for the annual defense bill, which would authorize about $1.15 trillion for fiscal 2027 and now heads toward further amendment votes Wednesday before final House passage.
