Jared Darlian of Dartmouth Health said Type 2 diabetes is rising among younger adults, making earlier screening critical before complications develop.
About 40 million Americans have diabetes and roughly 95% of cases are Type 2, while many people with diabetes or prediabetes remain undiagnosed because symptoms can appear late or not at all.
Routine blood work can catch prediabetes early, Darlian said, giving patients a chance to reverse course through lifestyle changes before Type 2 diabetes develops.
Untreated high blood sugar can damage the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves and other organs, though Type 2 diabetes can often be managed with healthier habits, medication and sometimes insulin.
