The CDC has already reported cases in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, but investigators have not yet identified the source of the current outbreak.
Cyclospora is commonly tied to contaminated fresh produce, with past outbreaks traced to fruits and vegetables exposed to feces-contaminated irrigation water.
Doctors said the illness usually causes watery diarrhea, cramps and nausea, is generally treatable with antibiotics, and is best prevented through hand washing and thoroughly washing produce.
