Matt Brown Hails Paddy Pimblett's 69-Second UFC 329 Breakout as Title Doubts Persist

Q: Is Pimblett's undeniable star power enough to conquer the UFC's most stacked division, or is his title hype premature?

Pimblett’s star power is real, but the title hype is still premature. UFC 329 showed why he is becoming one of the promotion’s biggest attractions. His 52-second submission of Benoit Saint-Denis was emphatic, technically sharp, and perfectly timed on a card with enormous attention because of Conor McGregor’s return. When McGregor’s main event ended almost immediately because of a serious knee injury, Pimblett became the night’s defining image. That is why Matt Brown’s comparison to McGregor’s early rise carries weight: Pimblett can sell fights, energize arenas, and seize a moment. But star power and championship readiness are not the same thing, especially at lightweight. The division remains the UFC’s deepest, with Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Ilia Topuria and Arman Tsarukyan all presenting elite, different problems. Pimblett’s recent loss to Gaethje is the clearest evidence that there is still a gap between being a breakout star and being the best 155-pounder in the world. Brown’s skepticism rests on that point: one spectacular finish does not erase a high-level defeat. That does not mean Pimblett cannot become champion. His record, finishing ability and confidence keep him in the mix, and another win or two over top contenders could quickly change the conversation. But right now, the evidence supports viewing him as a major draw with real upside rather than a proven title-level favorite. He has earned the spotlight; he has not yet conquered the division.
