The team’s recent run also suggests this is not purely luck; Boston has improved enough to justify trying to help the current roster. The risk comes if the Red Sox treat a hot streak as proof they are a true contender and start moving premium prospects for rentals. Their season before this run was uneven, and there is still a real chance of regression. More expensive targets such as Hunter Goodman, who would cost multiple high-end prospects and is reportedly unlikely to move anyway, would be the kind of gamble that could hurt the future. Boston’s best path is a middle one: buy, but protect the top of the farm system and avoid overpaying for short-term help. If Craig Breslow adds controllable or modest-cost pieces, this is a sensible response to a real opportunity, not a reckless playoff bet.
