Trump’s engagement with Capitol Hill is now “zero,” according to a person close to him, leaving congressional Republicans without White House help days before the August recess.
Allies told Politico he is focused on the SAVE America Act, Iran and a White House ballroom project instead of pushing legislation that incumbents could sell to voters before the midterms.
Lisa McClain, the House GOP conference chair, said Republicans plan to brand Democrats as tax-raising extremists, but acknowledged the White House has not adopted that message.
That vacuum leaves Republicans heading into the break with few policy wins to tout and more reliant on attack messaging as Democrats are seen holding an advantage in the midterms.
