JWST Detects Unknown 5.11-Micrometer Molecule on Pluto and Titan Surfaces

Scientists reported a matching absorption feature at 5.11 micrometers on the surfaces of Pluto and Saturn’s moon Titan, marking an unidentified molecule not previously seen elsewhere in the solar system or on known exoplanets.
JWST’s NIRSpec and MIRI instruments found the signal in surface spectra rather than in either world’s atmosphere, and researchers said no known molecule matches that wavelength.
Pluto’s absorption line is about three times thicker than Titan’s, suggesting greater abundance there, while Titan’s signal is patchier and stronger on its trailing side.
Possible candidates include benzene mixed with another compound, or acetylene- or ketene-based ices, though the team said none cleanly fits the data.
The finding is striking because Titan’s methane-rich, hazy world and Pluto’s frozen surface are so different; follow-up mapping is underway, while NASA’s Dragonfly mission in the mid-2030s may help probe Titan’s surface chemistry.
