Francis Marion Wildfire Swells to 550 Acres With 0% Containment

A 550-acre wildfire was still burning through swampland near Horse Island Road in Berkeley County as of 10 a.m. July 20, with no containment despite an expanding response.
More than 50 U.S. Forest Service and local firefighters are on scene, and officials have ordered extra resources including two helicopters as the blaze remains uncontrolled.
The fire has grown sharply since it was discovered around 4 p.m. on July 18 at about 15 acres, and authorities have not identified a cause or estimated when it will be extinguished.
Forecast rain later this week could aid suppression efforts, but for now the Francis Marion National Forest fire remains an active and worsening threat.
