Satellite images dated July 12 showed about 150,000 square miles of West Antarctica still ice-free in mid-winter, when the region would normally have refrozen after a heatwave.
Scientists linked the failed refreeze to climate change driven by fossil-fuel emissions, saying no models had predicted winter sea ice would remain absent in one of Earth’s coldest regions.
The finding adds to a run of Antarctic warning signs: winter sea ice hit record lows in 2023, an event researchers said had roughly a 1-in-3.5 million chance of occurring naturally.
Researchers have also warned the West Antarctic Ice Sheet could pass an irreversible collapse threshold with just 0 to 0.25°C more ocean warming, locking in about 4 meters of sea-level rise.
