Daily creatine injections slowed tumor growth in mice and increased both the activity and number of dendritic cells entering tumors, UCLA researchers reported.
Mouse dendritic cells lacking the creatine transporter were less active, survived less well and primed T cells more poorly, while added creatine raised ATP levels that power immune responses.
Human dendritic cells exposed to creatine in the lab also showed stronger activation and better ability to trigger T cells against cancer-related targets.
Those findings point to two possible uses: boosting patients’ responses during immunotherapy and improving dendritic cell-based cancer vaccines before treatment.
The study remains preclinical—limited to mice and lab-grown human cells—and the authors said patients should not treat it as evidence to start creatine supplements for cancer.
