Summary
A lawfully armed customer with a concealed-carry permit shot and killed a knife-wielding man at Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que in Cerritos after deputies said the man charged at him.
Deputies responding around 2:12 p.m. found the man with a gunshot wound and lacerations; he was pronounced dead at the scene after entering the restaurant and running through kitchen and service areas.
Sheriff's officials said the man had already stabbed himself before reaching the restaurant, after abandoning a stolen truck and appearing at a nearby Starbucks wounded and carrying a knife.
An off-duty officer inside the restaurant witnessed the shooting but did not fire, and the customer who shot the man stayed at the scene and is cooperating with homicide investigators.
Investigators have not identified the dead man or released a motive, while the restaurant remained blocked off and witnesses and employees were being interviewed.
