Summary
Eighteen years after Gears of War 2 launched on Xbox 360, Helios has put the full game on Windows as Gears of War 2: Hollow, an unofficial native port distributed free through ModDB and Discord.
The release is built from a never-released 2008 development build rather than emulation, and includes the full single-player campaign, Steam co-op, Horde, multiplayer, all DLC maps, and the Road to Ruin expansion.
PC-specific upgrades include high-resolution support, uncapped framerates, mouse-and-keyboard controls, an FOV slider, and graphics options, though some UI still shows Xbox button prompts and online modes remain effectively beta-tested.
Demand has already overwhelmed parts of the project: Helios' Discord stopped accepting new users, some mirrors have failed, and the port's availability could change quickly because it redistributes assets from a leaked internal build.
The fan release fills a long-standing gap left by Microsoft, which never brought Gears of War 2 or 3 to PC even as Gears of War: E-Day is set to launch on PC and Xbox on October 6, 2026.
