$1 trillion in added economic value could come from Americans staying healthy enough to work one extra year, CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz said in an interview in Washington.
Oz tied that goal to cutting healthcare costs through better-quality care, arguing that poor treatment creates expensive downstream complications and that payment should reward value rather than procedures.
Fewer than half of Medicare beneficiaries use their free annual wellness visit, he said, leaving conditions undetected and often leading to costlier treatment later.
Oz also backed safe use of AI, new medicines and screening tools to deliver care more effectively and keep older Americans active, framing better health as both a fiscal and workforce strategy.
