Summary
More than 55 million people from Cleveland to Washington were under severe weather threat Saturday as thunderstorms swept the Northeast, toppling trees, flooding roads and knocking out power for tens of thousands in Virginia and Maryland.
Winds above 70 mph were the main concern Saturday night, the National Weather Service said, with a smaller tornado risk and watches covering southeast Pennsylvania and much of Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey.
New Jersey and New York City took some of the hardest hits by afternoon, with downpours trapping drivers in floodwaters, including a box truck partially submerged under a Brooklyn-Queens Expressway overpass.
The storms cleared days of wildfire smoke from the region but replaced it with flash-flood danger, and forecasters warned additional rounds could move through New York City before 8 p.m. and again around 11 p.m.
