Summary
A new VCU poll found Gov. Abigail Spanberger underwater, with 46% disapproving of her job performance and 44% approving — an unusual position for a new Virginia governor.
The drag came largely from men, especially in western Virginia: 52.5% of men disapproved versus 37.4% approving, while women backed her 50.1% to 38.9%; western Virginia posted 63% disapproval.
That weakness did not extend to several major policies. Voters backed paid sick leave 83%-10%, favored extra data-center fees 78%, opposed data-center tax breaks 69%, and supported rejoining RGGI 57%.
The poll also found broader unease, with 45% saying Virginia is headed in the wrong direction versus 39% in the right direction, a split strongest among men and in western Virginia.
VCU researchers said gender alone cannot explain Spanberger's ratings, pointing instead to overlapping factors including the budget stalemate, redistricting fight and possibly backlash to new gun laws.
