Q: Will the NHL's new Monday matinees sacrifice local fans for a global audience?

Yes — to some extent, that is the tradeoff the NHL is making. The league’s Monday matinees are explicitly built for Europe-facing television windows. A 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. Eastern start lands in evening prime time in Sweden and later prime time in Moscow, and the NHL has said the goal is to deepen ties with international fans and raise club visibility abroad. The strategy also fits a broader push that includes Global Series games in Finland and Germany, stronger European digital distribution, and the return of NHL players to major international events. For local fans in North America, though, weekday afternoon hockey is less convenient. A Monday 1 p.m. start is difficult for many ticket buyers, especially workers, students and families, and it can hurt the usual pregame and postgame business around arenas. Reporting on team schedules has already pointed to concerns that weekday-heavy home slates are worse for in-person attendance than weekend dates. That does not mean the NHL is abandoning local fans. There are only 10 designated Monday matinees in an 84-game season, and the league is framing them as special-event inventory rather than a wholesale scheduling shift. Some afternoon games may also work for holiday crowds, flexible workers and fans who want a different arena experience. So the answer is yes, but in a limited way: the NHL is sacrificing some local convenience on a small number of dates in order to chase a larger global audience and long-term international growth.

Washington will play two 1 p.m. ET Monday games in 2026-27—Dec. 21 at Toronto and March 15 vs. Tampa Bay—as part of a new NHL scheduling push aimed at overseas viewers.
Those starts land at 7 p.m. in Sweden and 9 p.m. in Moscow, fitting the league’s plan to put star players in weekday prime time for European and Russian audiences.
The Capitals have six Monday games overall, with a third afternoon start at 4 p.m. ET against Pittsburgh on Jan. 18, while the March 15 home date could complicate attendance for local fans.
Leaguewide, the NHL scheduled 10 Monday matinees at 1 or 2 p.m. ET this season, separate from traditional holiday afternoon games, to expand brand awareness in Europe and North America.
That outreach also includes Global Series games in Finland on Nov. 12 and 14 and in Germany on Dec. 18 and 20, with Germany reportedly a key target market.
