Madewell Recalls 5,900 Women's Sweaters Over Flammability Burn Hazard

In product-liability law, that kind of defect can trigger claims against everyone in the chain of distribution: the manufacturer, importer, distributor and retailer. That means an injured consumer would not necessarily have to sue only the brand. Madewell, part of J.Crew Group, is the primary target because it designed and marketed the sweaters and is now running the recall. If the problem stemmed from fabric choice, garment construction, testing failures or compliance breakdowns, those issues usually point back to the manufacturer or importer. The fact that the sweaters were made in China could also bring any importer or sourcing entity into the picture. T.J. Maxx is not shielded because it is an off-price seller. Retailers that place products into the stream of commerce can also be held strictly liable in many jurisdictions, even if they did not create the defect. Its risk would increase if it kept selling the sweaters after learning of the hazard or failed to act promptly on the recall. A recall does not erase liability. If someone was burned, the recall may actually help show the product was defective.

The July 16 recall covers about 5,900 Madewell sweaters after the CPSC said two women's styles fail a mandatory federal flammability standard and could cause serious burn injuries or death.
The affected items are Double V-Neck Pullover sweaters, style NT611, and V-Neck Cardigan sweaters, style NT612, sold in light blue and cream in sizes XS through L.
Madewell said the sweaters were sold nationwide at Madewell and T.J. Maxx stores and online from December 2024 through October 2025 for $138 to $148.
One sweater has been reported catching fire, but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers should stop using the sweaters, cut them in half, email proof to Madewell, and seek a full refund or store credit.
