Bryson DeChambeau said late Friday he will play the weekend at Royal Birkdale, backing away from talk of skipping Round 3 after a two-stroke penalty dropped him to 5-under.
The R&A ruled that on the fifth hole he inadvertently improved the area of his intended backswing by stepping down long grass, turning his bogey into a triple-bogey 7 under Rule 8.1.
That changed his second-round 66 to a 68, moving him from second place to a tie for fifth, three shots behind leader Lucas Herbert.
The ruling came more than an hour after his round, after officials revisited the fifth hole with DeChambeau during a heated exchange in which he argued the decision.
The setback interrupted DeChambeau's strongest major showing of 2026 after missed cuts at the Masters, PGA Championship and U.S. Open.
