Summary
Nevada’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls rose to 1,614,100 in June, up 3,800 from May and 36,700 from a year earlier, while the unemployment rate edged down to 5.1% from 5.2%.
Las Vegas drove most of that gain, adding 3,000 jobs on the month and reaching a record 1,178,100 jobs; statewide, leisure and hospitality added 1,700 jobs and education and health services gained 700.
The strength was uneven across the state: Reno-Sparks lost 600 jobs from May and Carson City shed 100, while trade, transportation and utilities cut 800 jobs statewide and professional and business services lost 700.
Nevada still faces one of the nation’s highest jobless rates, nearly a point above the 4.2% U.S. rate, even after leading the country in year-over-year employment growth through May for an 11-month streak.
Labor-market signals were mixed beyond payrolls: the labor force fell by 6,845 in June, initial unemployment claims rose 8.6% to 11,695, and average weekly benefits increased 5.2% from a year earlier to $502.82.
