Summary
Shopify said it has deployed new controls that significantly reduced fake order notifications created by bad actors abusing the Shop app platform.
One reported fake invoice showed a $345.07 Geek Squad Family Subscription and urged users to call a phone number embedded in the order details, even though no real purchase had been made.
Dave Hatter, a cybersecurity expert, said the scam’s goal is to get users on the phone, where fraudsters can use social engineering to steal card details, bank information or computer access.
Shopify urged users not to call numbers in suspicious notifications, to check bank accounts first and to report the store in the app; the FTC says victims should also file a complaint.
