Earendil bought Pi outright about two months after Armin Ronacher publicly endorsed the coding agent, and brought creator Mario Zechner in as a major stakeholder while unveiling the Lefos hosted platform.
Pi’s appeal is its stripped-down design: four built-in tools, a system prompt under 1,000 tokens, and visible AGENTS.md context instead of hidden orchestration, sub-agents or permission popups.
RFC 0015 says Pi’s core will remain MIT-licensed, while Earendil keeps room for paid Fair Source layers and hosted services on top—an open-core model common in infrastructure software.
The project has already passed 70,000 GitHub stars, and the current release was reported as version 0.80.3 with support for 15-plus model providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Ollama.
