Anthropic Extends Free Fable Access to July 19 as $50-per-Million Pricing Looms

July 19 is Anthropic’s new cutoff for free Fable access on all paid Claude plans, while Claude Code weekly rate limits stay 50% higher.
Analysts said the extension is a late push to capture users, usage data and model-evaluation results before Fable shifts to pay-per-use pricing of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
Those rates are double Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 on both input and output, and above OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5.6 Sol at $5 and $30, intensifying a market-share fight as both companies chase scale ahead of possible IPOs.
Fable’s pricing uncertainty follows a turbulent rollout: launched June 9, hit by U.S. export controls on June 12 after a safeguards bypass, then relaunched July 1 after fixes and the controls were lifted.
The giveaway also feeds a broader AI race in which vendors use free tokens to lock in enterprises and gather training data, even as customers weigh whether higher-priced models can still lower total costs through greater efficiency.
