Cure for Paranoia broke through by pairing persistence with a major creative and personal shift: Cameron McCloud became more fully himself in the music, sharpened his craft through daily writing, and stopped treating Tiny Desk as the band’s only path forward. After entering four times since 2023, McCloud said the winning submission, “No Brainer,” was the most authentic he had ever been in a contest entry. That confidence came from writing a new rap verse every day throughout 2025, a discipline that produced much of the song’s lyrics and helped build trust in his own voice. He also approached the contest more strategically. After earlier attempts, he studied past winners to understand what made an entry stand out. At the same time, he shifted his mindset away from depending on Tiny Desk to define the band’s future, focusing instead on building Cure for Paranoia’s own audience. That broader momentum, including a large following from his daily verse series, appears to have strengthened the group’s position. The result was “No Brainer,” a pro-mental-health blend of rap, hip-hop and soul that judges praised for its catharsis, humor and humanity. In a contest that draws more than 6,000 entries a year, that mix of authenticity, disciplined songwriting and a more self-reliant approach was the key to Cure for Paranoia’s breakthrough.
