Summary
A newly released Essex County DA report said Hernan Marrero, 50, drank nine alcoholic beverages at a Saugus bar, then drove the wrong way on Route 1 and killed Massachusetts Trooper Kevin Trainor in a head-on crash.
Marrero’s blood alcohol level was 0.192, and investigators said he ignored clear WRONG WAY, DO NOT ENTER and ONE WAY signs before driving 1.8 miles south in the northbound lane.
Trainor, 30, had just clocked out from a public safety detail at 1:52 a.m. and was the first cruiser to encounter Marrero after warnings were broadcast over police radio.
The Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission has cited Tribu Mexican Kitchen and Bar for alleged civil violations including after-hours service and free drinks; a hearing is set for July 28, while prosecutors said criminal charges are not sustainable.
Crash reconstructionists found no vehicle defect or signage problem, and the DA said Trainor’s actions likely prevented a greater tragedy.
