FBI Finds 4 Bags of Suspected Meth in Van After Fatal July 7 ICE Shooting

The F.B.I. has also said it is trying to establish “all facts related to this incident, including what may have caused the occupants of the vehicle to flee.” In that context, checking for drugs could help investigators assess possible explanations for the chase and evaluate the competing accounts of what happened before the fatal shot was fired. What is not supported by the record is any claim that drugs prompted the encounter in the first place. Authorities had no prior indication that drugs were in the van, and there has been no public evidence that Salgado Araujo or the other men had a drug-related history. Four small bags of a white crystal-like substance were visible inside Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s work van, and an FBI affidavit said the packaging was consistent with methamphetamine.
The July 14 warrant sought evidence of possible federal drug offenses after agents photographed the van from outside; the filing says investigators also believed the automobile exception already gave them probable cause to search.
The affidavit says ICE agents first tried to stop the van around 6:45 a.m. on July 7, did not pursue after it crossed a median, then relocated it on Canal Street, where an agent shot and killed Salgado Araujo.
That account remains disputed: DHS says the agent acted in self-defense after Salgado Araujo tried to run over an officer, while the three other occupants say ICE vehicles hit the van and no agent was in its path.
Harris County’s district attorney is separately building a timeline of the shooting, and no public video has emerged; federal officials have said the agents had neither body cameras nor dash cameras.
