Summary
AssuranceAmerica began notifying 6,998,886 people after a March cyberattack exposed driver’s license numbers and other personal data tied to auto insurance customers.
March 16 malicious activity targeted an employee, and investigators said an unauthorized third party later accessed parts of the insurer’s IT environment and copied data files; suspicious activity was detected March 17.
The stolen files may include names, contact details, policy or account information, vehicle and claims data, with some records also containing Tax ID information or Social Security numbers, according to California and Indiana breach notices.
AssuranceAmerica said it took affected servers offline, reset passwords, added monitoring, hired forensic specialists and is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring.
Because AssuranceAmerica works through independent agents, affected people may not recognize the company name even if their policy, quote, claim or driver information passed through its systems.
