Spokesman Julien Odoul said Rajoy’s words were the opposite of the French national idea, which unites citizens under the tricolor “whatever the origin or religion of each one.” So the RN’s stance was not a rejection of its broader hard line on immigration and identity. It was a defense of a national symbol—the French team—and a way to draw a distinction between its own nationalist politics and explicit racial exclusion.
