ESPN reported MLB owners want players in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, but talks have stalled over a proposal to make participation mandatory and sideline decliners on the restricted list for nearly a month without pay.
The MLB Players Association strongly opposes giving Commissioner Rob Manfred discipline power "for just cause" and says players should receive direct compensation or at least protection from expenses and lost commercial rights tied to LA28.
11 days is the planned MLB shutdown to fit the Olympic tournament and preceding All-Star Game, while unresolved logistics still include family tickets, housing and who stays at the Olympic Village versus hotels.
435 hotel rooms have been offered by LA28, and MLB has already reserved 200—half for its players and half for Japan—as the six-team baseball tournament is set for Dodger Stadium with the U.S. already qualified as host.
