That is a sharp reversal from 2022, when half of the league’s 12 head coaches were Black women. Across nearly 30 years of league history, only 22 Black women have ever been hired as head coaches. This season is reportedly only the third in league history with none in those roles. That matters because the issue is not symbolic alone. Coaching jobs are among the clearest pathways to power, influence and long-term career stability in professional sports. Paige Bueckers’ point reflects a broader concern: a league that publicly celebrates Black women as its foundation must also provide equitable access to leadership. The WNBA is not devoid of Black leadership. There are three Black female general managers and two Black male head coaches. But that does not erase the specific absence of Black women in the top coaching role. Former Seattle coach Noelle Quinn called that representation an honor and said it matters. Whether this is a hiring-cycle anomaly or evidence of a deeper structural problem will depend on what happens next. If the league wants its equity message to be credible, future hiring must better reflect the women who built it.
