Harper also had a credible path: he is a former Derby champion, had hit 59 home runs at the park since 2023, and had already shown he could handle home-crowd pressure by winning the 2018 Derby in Washington. The pressure, though, was always going to be substantial. Philadelphia fans packed the ballpark hours early, and the expectation for a hometown moment was obvious. The new swing-based format also reduced room for recovery, rewarding rhythm and efficiency more than spectacle. In the end, Schwarber could not fully convert the home-field advantage. He reached the final but lost 12-11 to Jordan Walker after Walker’s late comeback. Schwarber later admitted he pressed, saying he was “trying way too hard” because he wanted to win it for the crowd. That is strong evidence that the hometown setting was both a boost and a burden. Harper’s ability to overcome that kind of pressure is proven historically, but on this night the hometown breakthrough did not happen. Philadelphia got the atmosphere it wanted, but not the Derby title from its stars.
